My husband and I decided to get rid of our television service. Most people can't even begin to understand why we would decide to do such a thing. I've gotten a few strange looks from people at work already. I should not be surprised though. It seems like people can't live without their TVs. This one girl I work with refused to have Thanksgiving at a certain family members house because they didn't have cable. What is that all about?! It sounds like a crack addiction or something. "Oh my god!! I can't go 5 hours without watching TV!!! AHHH!!!!!"
I have come to believe that TV is bad for the functionality and emotional well being of your brain. I first came to this conclusion through personal experience. Ever since I started working full time (you know... get up, go to work, come home, go to bed, get up...) I would come home and not want to do a damn thing because I was so exhausted from being there all day. What better thing to do than sit on my ass and zone out in front of the TV? And that is what I would do. I started to realize that it was making me more tired than I already was from work and I felt like I was actually getting stupider (is that a word?). It started making me feel lazy and bad about myself. As for the addicting part, I'm distracting myself with YouTube as I write this. But thats only because I am looking for a bad ass song for you to listen to at the end of my little anti-TV rant.
I feel like I have actually damaged my brain. But I also feel like there is hope. I plan on exercising it. Like a muscle, I'm going to use it more and hope it becomes strong again. Getting rid of the TV is going to be the first step. That's actually how I quit smoking ciggs. Can't smoke 'em if I don't have any. I'll just leave the part out where I just recently started smoking again. Oooops, I guess I fucked that up. Oh well. That's for another rant some other day. Anyways... we actually have a box that Dish sent us to return the satellite boxes in. So tonight is the night!!! After its gone, I wont have any choice but to occupy myself with more stimulating activities. Like reading, writing, painting, and spending time with my babies and my husband.
On that note, here is a cool link to a site that discusses the effects of TV on your brain...

And... here is a song about hatin on the TV (among other things) by one of my favorite bands, the Violent Femmes:
